Glossary

Our selection of glossaries of scientific and medical terms should provide you with sufficient options to find clear explanations. The first three provide various reading levels and coverage of genetic terminology. The last one covers a broader range of medical terms.

National Human Genome Research Institute Glossary  The NHGRI created this glossary to help people without scientific backgrounds understand the terms and concepts used in genetic research. The definitions are accompanied by images and diagrams to clarify the verbal descriptions, the term's pronunciation, audio information, and additional links to related terms. A good learning resource for students and children, but a limited range of topics.

US Department of Energy, Human Genome Project Glossary  This glossary is easy to use and covers a wide range of genetic topics. The site also provides access to many other online glossaries from well respected scientific and medical organisations. The reading level is suitable for students and families.

New South Wales Genetics Education Programme glossary  Designed for those with little or no background in genetics. This is an excellent resource with interactive access to the more detailed descriptions and diagrams that are contained on this site.

Medical Dictionary at MedLinePlus  Produced by the US Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. A good source of reliable medical information.
