Folic acid update report released

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has released a report monitoring the health impacts of mandatory folic acid and iodine fortification. This report is the second stage of a three stage review process.

The released report assesses population health effects of:

  • the mandatory addition of folic acid to wheat flour for bread making in Australia to help reduce the prevalence of neural tube defects (NTDs) and
  • iodine fortification, via iodised salt to bread, in Australia and New Zealand, to address the re-emergence of iodine deficiency in the population.
